Why adopt a mobula?
Because the species that gives us our name does not appear in the data.
When building the Observatory we loaded the full OBIS catalogue for the Colombian Caribbean: 5,038 species. Of the ten species in the genus Mobula —among them the giant manta and the devil ray, both found in the Caribbean—, none has a single species-level record with usable coordinates in that area. OBIS holds just four records of the genus, with the location generalised to a 10-degree cell, and GBIF a Miocene fossil from La Guajira.
That does not mean they are not there. It means nobody has recorded them with method. It is exactly the gap that justifies a foundation: what is not measured is not protected, and what is not in the data enters no management decision.

Where your contribution goes
To what nobody funds because it cannot be seen: the technical part that keeps the Observatory standing and open.
Servers and database
The Observatory runs on a PostGIS database holding almost 5,400 records and the taxonomy of 5,038 species, each with its own profile. That is paid for every month, rain or shine.
Map tiles
Every portion of the map someone pans is a billable request. It is the cost that grows when the Observatory is genuinely used, which is exactly what we want.
Ingestion and verification
Bringing in and standardising OBIS records, and maintaining the system where a biologist reviews every citizen report before publishing it.

The adoption is symbolic: it grants no ownership of or rights over any animal. What is adopted is the commitment to sustain the work that studies and protects them.
