Marine and coastal research
Carried out by the Foundation's team
What kind of marine research can a project or an institution commission?
Applied research with a sampling design, auditable data and conclusions that help you decide: baseline characterisation, the marine component of impact assessments, assessment of threats such as coral bleaching or abandoned fishing gear, and the design and follow-up of coral, seagrass and mangrove restoration.
Who's behind it
Karen Alexandra Pabón leads the hydrobiological resources line at Colombia's National Parks and has fifteen years of work with turtles, marine mammals and elasmobranchs. Carlos Andrés Espejo has worked on restoring the mouths of the Gaira and Manzanares rivers, and Esteban René Andrade brings more than fifteen years in turtle and marine mammal conservation. What you get
- Technical report with method, results and interpretation
- Open-format databases, structured in Darwin Core
- Thematic mapping of the study area
- Management recommendations based on the results
- Restoration and follow-up protocols, where applicable
Timeline
From 4 weeks for a one-off characterisation to several months for a time series or a restoration, which needs at least 12 months to demonstrate survival.
How we do it
- Underwater visual censuses along transects, with certified scientific diving
- Identification of fish and invertebrates in the field and in the lab
- Seabed orthomosaics with Agisoft Metashape
- Assessment of coral bleaching, abandoned fishing gear and strandings, with location and severity
- Seagrass transplanting and coral nurseries, with survival follow-up
- Carbon measurement in biomass and sediment
Regulatory framework
- Colombia — Decree 1076 of 2015 and ANLA terms of reference
- Colombia — Invemar protocols for monitoring marine ecosystems
- Verra VM0033 methodologies for tidal wetlands
- IPCC guidelines for coastal wetland inventories
